Rainbow Obsidian is a type of volcanic glass, created when lava cools quickly. Its alluring colors are due to microscopic mineral inclusions -- mainly magnetite nanoparticles -- that refract light and give it a rainbow-like shimmer. It is hard to capture its glossy surface with a photo, but its mesmerizing play of colors can be admired in person.
